Troubleshooting Shell Feature Failures in Inventor Part 1
By Dennis Jeffrey, AICE

Converging Radial Shape Issues
If radii exist on the part before applying a shell feature, any thickness that causes a cylindrical, tori, or spherical shape converging to zero (or less than zero) will default to sharp edges.

Special shapes such as variable radius fillets, sculpts, lofts, and similar irregular features, are not included in this special situation. If these special shapes converge, the shell feature will not be created and an error message is displayed.

When shelling such a part, it is recommended that complex fillets be applied after the shelling operation has been successfully completed. In addition, if the shell is performed before the filleting takes place, you will experience better performance during these operations.
