Exporting Inventor IDW to DWG - Inventor Release 11/2009 to AutoCAD 2011/2012
By Dennis Jeffrey, AICE
Description of the problem
Saving an inventor IDW to a DWG format does not map layers correctly, and jumbles dimensions. AutoCAD 2007 does not fit text correctly in dimension styles. This is an issue with AutoCAD 2007.
Suggested solution
- In Inventor, create an IDW template or a new style in the styles library, where you can define a new style that contains all the layers that you wish to use in a DWG.
- Be sure to map all objects to the desired layer names.
- Create or edit the dimension style that will be used, so that dimensions appear correctly in Inventor.
- In AutoCAD, create a drawing with dimension styles, text styles, and layer definitions that are identical to the layers and styles actively used in Inventor.
- Pay special attention to the Dimension styles> Fit > Fit Options tab in AutoCAD.
- Save the dwg as a template file.
- In Inventor, create an IDW using the styles defined in step one.
- When the IDW drawing is complete, save the file. Then do a Save Copy As - dwg format. Be sure to select options before saving.
- In Options, select AutoCAD 2007 Drawing. Be sure to uncheck Pack and Go. Pack and Go will not create the dwg.
- Pick Next. In the next page, Set mapping to Closest AutoCAD Mapping, and browse to the AutoCAD 2007 template created in step 2.

- Finish the options dialog. You will then be prompted to name and save the dwg.
Notes
Sometimes when opening the dwg, text in dimensions will remain jumbled. In such an event, Edit the Dimension styles> Fit > Fit Options and toggle the Fit Options setting from the current, to another, then back to the previous selection.
Pick OK, then close the Dimension Style Manage. The dimensions should jump to the correct orientation.
