Inserting AutoCAD Blocks with Dimensions Into Inventor

Problem:
You wish to use AutoCAD blocks in Inventor IDW files. You are unable to insert a block, or create a symbol that contains dimensional data. Inventor does not support symbols with dimensions.

Options Available ( versions 9 through 2009 tested):

  • Use Insert > Object to insert a dwg containing block information. Use the Create From File option.
  • This will create a view in the IDW which may be edited by RMB-Edit.
  • The dwg will open in AutoCAD, because it behaves like an AutoCAD Xref.
  • Have AutoCAD open before insertion, and the process is nearly instant.
  • In Inventor 2008, create the 2D file as an Inventor DWG.
  • Then open in AutoCAD and add the blocks as normal. When the file is opened in Inventor, the blocks are listed.
